5 Top tips for new dog owners

You've taken the plunge and have brought a dog into your world. Whilst welcoming a new pup to your home can be exciting. It can also be daunting as well, especially if you're a first-time dog owner.

Any time you are bringing a new dog home. Make sure to plan ahead.
Here are the top tips for new dog owners:
1) Familiarise yourself with toxic foods 
A lot of common households store toxic foods for dogs. It is important to keep these items out of reach. Heres a shortlist of ones to look out for:
  • Chocolate
  • Alcohol
  • Grapes 
  • Caffeine 
  • Raisins 
 2) Find a local vet 
To keep them updated with their jabs. Find a local vet in advance. Make sure you look around to make sure your dog is in the right hands. 
 3) Encourage curiosity, not fear 
Puppies have been known to be nervous when experiencing new environments. Some may cry or cower away. If this does happen, don't always console them. Allow them to discover the world with curiosity, rather than fear. Reward calm behavior with praise and affection.
4) Patience is key  
This is a new experience for you and your dog. Both of you will take time to adjust. Make sure your dog feels comfortable in his new environment and is settling well. Learn to adjust and compromise to see what works for both of you.
5) Come up with a routine and stick with it 
Make sure you get your dog into a routine at first. Small things like feeding time and bedtime. Will help them get better with other habits while settling at your house. From a set routine your dog will learn when and when not to go the toilet. What time of the day it is when you go to work. A set routine is the best way of helping your dog settle.
